Olympus OM-D E-M5 with mZD 12-50 Kit Lens mounted

Olympus OM-D E-M5 with mZD 12-50 Kit Lens mounted

I finally managed to get one of the hottest cameras on the market right now, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 with a kit lens. The only reason I purchased the lens as well was for protection against inclement weather. No point having a camera that's splash proof and not having a lens to go with it. It's actualy an OK lens, nothing really great about it but it does the job. One of the good things about it is the macro mode. Put it in macro mode by pressing the macro button on the side of the lens and slide the focusing ring forwards. The lens is then fixed at 43mm. Very good for close-up photography.
I wanted to see how this combination does for my favourite photography, photographing clouds. I had a good change one eavening when the light was almost gone but some huge clouds has gathered to the south east. They were being illuminated by the setting sun giving them a fascinating look. The shapes were great and the texture pretty nice.

Sony SEL 50 f1.8

Sony SEL 50 f1.8

This will be the last image from the SEL 50 f1.8 for now. I hope that I have shown what this lens can do in different situations. I think I'll be keeping this lens as it is quite sharp and contrasty. Another reason of course if that Sony lenses for the Nex system aren't really in abundance out there. Nice to see that Sigma brought out the 19 and 30 f2.8 lenses, for those are real gems. I have the 55-210 on order and I'm really hoping that this lens will cover my long end for the system. I have seen some nice images with it but I've also heard some complaints about it. If it doesn't deliver then it looks like an 18-200 lens will have to be purchased. I'm not really looking forward to be doing that.
Any requests or comments to these posts will be highly appreciated.

In some situations or using certain lenses I prefer the Nex-5N to the Nex-7. Certainly the ergonomics of the Nex-7 is better but I like to keep the native lenses on that camera. It really is a shame that the sensor doesn't like RF legacy lenses because there are some really nice ones out there. The shorter you go the worse the fringing becomes. I've had a hard time with some images from the CV 15 f4.5 lens. Very time consuming too so now I tend to use these lenses on the Nex-5N.
This image is one of my favouties that I have taken with the SEL 50 f1.8 lens. It has a certain 3D look and feel to it. I also like that the pink flower is so dominant even though there are other flowers to be seen.

Probably not very visible on this small sized image, but there is a lot of detail in the bark of this tree. I actually took this because of the spot being highlighted at the base of the trunk. I think I'm going to have to redo this one because that's not very visible either. Sometimes this happens on the first run in post procesessing, you just have to go back and start again. If you're using Lightroom (now in v4.1) you just go back to the image and redo what's already beed done, or zero the image and start all over again. For those who haven't tried Lightroom, please do so. It really is a wonderful tool.

Coming to the last few 50 f1.8 images I hope that I have demponstrated the capabilities of this lens. Having an AOV equivelent to a 75mm lens it's a little short for my taste. I prefer something in the 60 or 70 range for my everyday shooting giving me an angle of view of 120 to 150. That's why I  like the Canon 135 f2 lens so much. I also love using the CV Heliar 75 f2.5 on the m4/3 cameras, that gives me a 150mm AOV.

Another angle on the same flowers as in yesterdays post. never only take one image of something and go on to the next one. Work the subject, you will get more than one keeper I can assure you. This bee had landed and I just went to my knees and took another shot focusing on the nearest flower.

Imprewssive photo, even if I do say so myself. This is the format and type of image that I really do like. I could look at these images all day long. Again, I'm impressed at how it locked on to the flower an amazing feat considering the background.

The focus point was the front side of the flower in the foreground. Seems to be in facus too. This lens has shown me that focusing is pretty fast AND accurate AND at f1.8. To tell you the truth, I really didn't expect this one to be in focus. I didn't expect that the front part of the flower would actually be in focus. Normally either the part of the flower behind where I am focusing is in focus or the background is in focus but not the front. This is using autofocus of course. Manually focusing does have an advantage here in that you decide which part is in focus and not the system itself. That's what makes using legacy lenses so much fun to use. Granted, autofocus is faster than I am in locking focus but some of the time I'm not so sure exactly which part of the scene it's actually locked onto.

This isn't anything special I admit, but it is the sort of image I like. A bit of an abstract I can really just sink into this image and imagine how the grass was swaying in the breeze.

Another at f1.8 just a second after the bee landed. It wasn't a still day so the flowers were moving some. Still focusing was good and it locked on at the first attempt.
