Panasonic GF1 - Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens

Panasonic GF1 - Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens

This is the last image from this combination for now. These are the same two from the fist image I posted a few days ago. Heading back to the club house after what must have been a couple of hours rowing up and down the Main. Must have been a good outing. They still looked fresh too.

I think the 14-45 will stay on the GF1 from now on becaue it makes it quite a small combination and the grip I bought for the GF1 really enhanses the feel of the camera for me. Really fun to use, although dynamic range isn't as good ans the newer generation cameras, I still think it still takes very good images and the only drawback of it all is me. The combination can do more that I can want froma  system and I keep asking myself why I need the other cameras in my arsenal. The answer is of course, GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome).

I desaturated this image but kept a hint of coulour coming through. I just prefered it like this over the other variation I did.

If I was honest and looking at images at this size from different companies I don't think I could tell the difference. Could I tell that this image was from the GF1 and not from an Olympus OM-D? No I don't think so. Having said that there are a few lenses that do stand out and do prefer using them over others. This lens beats the Olympus 14-42 kit lens hands down in my opinion but I have read that others must have a steller Olympus kit lens as they find it very good.
This image was taken at an aperture of f/5.6 and at 45mm. So, it was wide open and it is actually quite sharp from corner to corner which says a lot for a kit lens.
The reason I actually took this image was because I saw a paddler going along quite nicely down the river Main. I'm not sure if I would do this as barge traffic is quite heavy here.

I couldn't let this series go without including a monchrome image (or two). I find that the lens makes a big difference in how I convert images to black and white. This one turned out ok.
Monochrome for me is an image with a lot of contrast, nearly harsh. I have seem some that contain only grey and have a distinct lack of contrast. Some of those image work obviously but most do not and are really not to my liking. Just my opinion of course.

I thought I would sneak this one in because I like the way it does people photos.
I don't know how you see this image but on my calibrated monitor, there could be a slight red tint to the image, something I get a lot of with my Panasonic cameras. Please let me know what you think of this one. Your monitor could be calibrated differently to mine. I really would appreciate some feedback on this one.

For a minute here I thought I was in Venice. Of course I wasn't and I'm quite surprised how many people like doing this sort of thing. There are a lot of rowing clubs along the Main in Frankfurt and they do all sorts as well as the what I call "normal" rowing exercises.

Panasonic GF1 - Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens

Panasonic GF1 - Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens

I find it really hard to sell my equipment, as a matter of fact I don't (apart from what I consider really bad). I haven't bought all that much equipment that I consider really bad, I always attempt to work within the boundaries of what a certain lens or camera can do. If need be (and quite often it is so) I change my post processing workflow to suite the equipment. I think most people do this as equipment characteristics differ.
One afternoon I decided to get the old Panasonic GF1 out of the drawer and stick my favourtite kit lens on it; the Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. I still consider this the best kit lens ever made (although the Fujinon X 18-55 F2.8-4 lens is also a very good lens). One attraction of the m4/3 system is that the lenses are interchangeable with all the cameras made by Olympus and Panasonic. That, to me, is a great plus.
Right now I'm really struggling to get the correct colour from the newer Panasonic bodies but not with the Olympus cameras and since Panasonic has some good lenses lacking in the Olympus corner I just mount those on the Olympus bodies. I think the only Panasonic body I has really great colour from is the DMC-L1 which I still have and use with the PL 4/3 14-150 lens. A really remarkable combination. However at only 7.5MP it's not really competing with the newer models for resolution. Having said that I've printed out images at 80 x 60 cms and they look great.
