Sony Nex-5N mounting an adapted Pentax FA 43 f1.9

Sony Nex-5N mounting an adapted Pentax FA 43 f1.9

I like trees and I like taking photos of tree bark. Sounds strange maybe but you'll never get the same image twice. They will all be quite unique.
I should have stopped down anothe stop or two here as the top right isn't quite in focus. I sometimes forget that these lenses give a diference fild of view when mounted o theses APS-C cameras and you have to stop down a little more. This was taken at f4 and I really should have been at around f8.
Some day, I'll eventually get used to it...I hope.

The lens is quite small and not front heavy at all on the Nex-5N.
I think I'll try the FA 31 f1.8 next time out. A beautiful lens and one of the best ever made by any manufacturer. But, it is a lot longer than the 43 f1.9 and weighs nearly double, so it might be a better idea to put it on the Nex7 because it's bigger and I can grip it better. I should also think that there will be a lot of difference in image rendition between the two cameras. Alright, I'll have to test it on both.

I don't care what people say about Pentax, but their lenses are some of the best ever produced especiially the FA Limited lenses. I used the 43 f1.9 lens on this occasion and it really is a nice lens. Sharp with good rendition. Colour is accurate and manual focusing on the Nex system is very easy.
Here, the green moss on the stump cought my eye. A clump of green among a drab winter brown.
After a lot of rain in the last few weeks the moss is really a bright green, it sometimes hurts my eyes just to look at it. It's near fluoresence in colour.

My favourite buliding for photography, taken from the side.
Taken at 12mm and an aperture of f4. I can't complain about the image quality but there is some distortion there, more that I'd like really so the final conclusion for this lens is: Only use it for certain kinds of work (e.g. Portraits and low light) and never for landscaping. It is NOT my choice for this sort of work.

You can see from this image what a dreary day it was. I must admit this wasn't much fun but it is something I have to do. It's become like a drug and whenever I haven't taken some shots for a couple of days I start to get withdrawl symptoms. Really.

This image was taken at f4 which is about the best aperture for m4/3 lenses. F/5 will probable give you the same sharpness with a little more depth of field.
As you can see, even at this size everything is in focus from near to far. I did have to process some distortion out of the image but it wan nothing too dramatic.
Again, I'm really glad I kept that 14-45 kit lens.

The reason for this image is I wanted to see how purple fringing is controlled (or eliminated in-camera). For those of you who don't know: Panasonic adjusts for distortion and purple fringing in-camera. Olympus do not, even with their own lenses, adjust for purple fringing.
There was no adjustments made in PP for purple fringing on this image, and as you can see, there is little of it, if any at all.
Really impressed by this. I wonder if the 35-100 f2.8 zoom is the same. That's another lens test to do, I just wish I had the time for all these things I have on my to-do list. I think for every one I cross off, another 3 takes its place. As you can see, the image is quite sharp and I can't fault the lens at all.
BUT...it is expensive. Think twice before you buy this lens if all you do is general photography.

Panasonic G5 with the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8

I wanted to test this lens pretty badly so I really didn't have a choice but to out of a cold rainy miserable day. Not my choice weather for this sort of thing but the forecast didn't exactly predict some nice weather for the foreseable future, so out I went.
My normal walk is the same as ever, a circular route around the west docks in Frankfurt, Germany. I've stated before that I know what to expect from images of this area when a good lens is used so that I can tell instantly how good a lens is by looking at the images on my screen. In my opinion the lens is too expensive for this sort of photography but the lens should come into it's own when fast apertures are required.
The original 14-45 kit lens is still hard to beat for this purpose, especially at the price. You can't buy them new because they're out of production but they do come up on ebay. my adive, Just get one, you won't regret it.

Panasonic G5 with the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8

Things are hotting up on the lens market for the m4/3 system. Panasonic have brought out the 12-35 f2.8 zoom (35mm=24-70mm) and a nice lens it is too. I have to test this a little more but I would say that it is not made for landscaping. I think the very good 14-45 kit lens gets better results than the f2.8 zoom. Certainly I would use this lens when portraits are required and when the light gets a little low for hand-holding a slow zoom. I like the rendition and of course it's a f2.8 lens.
When taking landscape shots you will stop the lens down for optimal depth od field (normally) so this lens has no advantage against the 14-45 kit lens. It is heavier and the build quality seems better.

Nikon V1

Nikon V1

It really was a wet, windy and miserable as I headed home from my walk. Really not ideal for this type of system testing. The sky was just pure grey, but I had to get an image of one of my favourite buildings on the tour. I know what it looks like when a good lens is used and I must say that the 18.5mm f1.8 lens held it's own. Converted in Nik SFXII.
Now, what was I saying about that 30-110mm lens?
