I thought it might be quite useful to some people to see actual lenses mouted on various bodies to see how big or small they are for everyday use. In the image above you can see how small the CV 21 f/4 lens is on the Nex-5N and the Nex-5N can't be clasified as a large camera. If anything, it could be clasified by some people as being too small for use, and I can see their point of view. Since I have small hands it actually feels fine for me, but any smaller and I would have to say no. This is the smallest combination that I will consider. This lens is in the same league as the CV 35 F/2.5 and CV 50 f/2.5 lenses. Really small but delivers very good image quality.

DMC-G5 Focal Length: 89 mm Aperture: f/16.0 Exposure Time: 1/4 sec ISO: 160 03/18/13 EquipmentThis is the X-E1 with the 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 lens. Most of my cameras are black but when I saw the X-E1 in silver I went for it. I really wanted an X-Pro1 but as I read the problems (or quirks) with that camera I decided against it, and I still think that was the right decision. The X-E1 is smaller, faster and suits me fine. It has the same sensor as the X-Pro1 so image quality is the same. The EVF is better in the X-E1 and that is also a plus factor in its favour. It just suits my way of photographing better than the X-Pro1. I never use the LCD to photograph, it's just not me.
I am now waiting for the weather to get a little warmer and I'll be out and about with this combination. Right now I plan on expanding my lens arsenal for this system with the anounced XF 55-200 telezoom which seems (on paper at least) to be of high quality.
In the meantime, I'm really enjoying using some manual lenses on the X-E1 as manual focus is very good with the "shimmering" effect when in focus. 1341
DMC-G5 Focal Length: 89 mm Aperture: f/16.0 Exposure Time: 1/4 sec ISO: 160 • Fujifilm • X-E1 • 18-55 f/2.8-4.0
03/17/13 EquipmentAs you can see I have now purchased a Fujifilm X-E1 camera. I bought it together with the Fujinon 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 lens. I won't compare this kit lens with any other because it really is a quality lens with an aperture of f/2.8-4.0. Most kit lenses are in the range of f/3.5-5.6 or there abouts. Build quality is good and image quality is remarkable. I'll be talking more about the images from this lens in due course.
The image above shows the X-E1 with the Pentax SMC 31 f1.8 lens. One of the best lenses ever produced and is very sharp with very good micro-contrast. Being an FA lens and made for full frame Pentax cameras, it sports an aperture ring which is a real plus. Another Pentax lens that I will put on the X-E1 is the Pentax 43 f/1.9 lens. The reason for it being 43mm is because it really relates to the angle of view of the human eye. Most believe it's 50mm because that used to be the standard lens but it is actually 43mm. 1256
DMC-G5 Focal Length: 100 mm Aperture: f/11.0 Exposure Time: 1/13 sec ISO: 200 03/16/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Although I like the above image I think this will be the last image that I will post from this lens. Unless something dramatic happens to change my mind about this lens it will get one more outing in summer in good weather to confirm my suspicions and then it will be sold.
Anybody interested in this lens, just get in touch with me.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/250 sec ISO: 100 03/15/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Something isn't right with the focusing mechanism with this lens or it doesn't like being paired up to a Nex camera. Although I use the peeking function I get the feeling that the image is misfocused. Not all of the time but in a lot of cases. No I do not have this problem with other lenses so I will dismiss the arguement that it's the photographer that is the problem in this case. I know the DOF is shallow at f3.5 but normally I stop the lens down to f5.6 or f8.
The image above is sharp whree I focused the lens, namely on the moss growing on the branch. I took three images of this just to make sure I got one and two out of three images were not in focus.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/250 sec ISO: 100 03/14/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7OK, I can't fault the lens for a lack of contrast in this image. There wasn't a lot there to start with.
As you can see the weather was pretty cold, colours were muted and dull. Probably the wrong type of weather to go out testing lenses but I have to utilize the time available to me.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/125 sec ISO: 100 03/13/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Some of these images I actually like, like the one posted today. It certainly is sharp enough but again, it took some work to get the look. Other lenses would have produced this with less effort.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/400 sec ISO: 100 03/12/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7Some of these images might seem fine at this size but it take some doing in post production to get them to look this way. Better weather might help too as I think this lens would perform better with good sunlight. I might put it away right now and take it out again during the summer months (if we get a summer this year that is) and try it again. It does intrigue me to find the answer to that so that's what I'll do.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/250 sec ISO: 100 03/11/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7One of the major problems and one that is a deal breaker on lenses for me is the lack of contrast in the images. Some of you may argue that I can increase that in post production and you'd be right. I could, but I prefer lenses that have good micro contrast straight from the box. It's an extra step for my post processing workflow and there are better lenses out there.

NEX-7 Focal Length: unknown Aperture: f/1.0 Exposure Time: 1/50 sec ISO: 100 03/10/13 CV 85 f3.5 adapted for Sony Nex-7I'm trying really really hard to like this lens but somehow I don't think it's going to work out.
I've had this lens on a few outings already and I keep coming back to the same conclusion. It's not up there with some other lenses, namely the Leica Heliar 75 f2.5 and the Minolta Rokkor 90 F4 and the Leica Elmarit 90 f2.8. Those lenses are really top of the line and produce great images.
I think this one is going on the to sell list.
I'll be posting some more images from this lens for the next few days so you can determine for yourselves the quality that can be expected from this lens.
