Samsung NX10 - Samsung 18-55 f3.5-5.6 OIS

Just posting this last image from this system as I think this is an ok image. Taken at f8 which, after taking numerous images at different apertures, seems to be the optimal aperture for this lens. Again, I can't really fault the quality of the image but it does take me longer to get to this stage than with other newer systems.

My final thoughts on the Samsung system is I believe they far behind their competitors and have lost their way somewhat with the new Galaxy NX. The retail price of €1000+, I don't believe they'll sell too many. They should invest a lot in the camera AF system and get some weight into the cameras themselves. They just feel too plasicky and light.

I personally will not be investing in this system, and I think the NX10 and it's lenses will not be in my inventory much longer. Maybe I can find a new home for it where it will be much more appreciated than by me at present.

I posted a similar image to this one a caouple of days ago, but from a different system (Nikon V1). I wanted to compare the two systems to see the differences in colours, dynamic range etc. The Nikon system, for me, is the better system, but it is newer and technology doesn't stand still. But if you're after some images for the web or small prints, then there is nothing wrong with the NX system.

I only took the 18-55 zoom with me on this accasion because I wanted to see what it could do. Looking at these images (at this size) the images look ok but I wouldn't want to print all that large.

Looking at the prices of the Samsung lenses they are all relatively cheap and the prime lenses are very good indeed. Samsung have expanded the range and are still in the process of doing so, but I really believe the camera and it's AF lets the whole system down. They have just announced the Galaxy NX, an Android based camera, but to tell you the truth, I personally don't see any future in it.

Having said that, this camera (or the NX11) would be ideal for someone looking at getting into photography but doesn't want to invest too much money at the start. The Galaxy NX is too expensive for my taste and should be avoided at present. But then, that's just my opinion.

On one of my outings I decided to dust off a camera I haven't used for some time, the Samsung NX10. At the time I bought the camera I was looking for something small, light, not too expensive and had a couple of good primes for it. I got a really good deal on the NX10 and it came with the 18-55 f3.5-5.6 kit zoom. I bought the 30 f2 to go with the camera but held out a little longer before deciding to expand the system or not.

The 18-55 kit zoom is on ok lens, nothing special but it does the job. The 30 f2 lens on the other hand is a very good prime and I used it quite a bit after I aquired the system. But, as with everything else, something new comes on the market that has a feature which you really like, and so the older systems get forgotten.

The reason I decided to shelf the NX10 was because of the AF speed. It really isn't all that great and is miles apart from anything on the market today. Dynamic range has its shortcomings too and today you can tell that it is a couple of years since this came onto the market. Build quality is rather plasticy too although the lenses do have a metal mount. It's like your afraid to put the camera down somewhere because you think it's going to come apart in your hands.

To get as much depth of field as possible in the above image I stoped down to f9 but being careful not to stop down too much because of diffraction, I got what I wanted from this image. Everything is in focus.

Having looked at a few X100S images ofter yesterday's post, I think I made the right decision not to purchase the Sony RX1 or the Leica Vario X. Just look at the clarity and sharpness of the image above. I can't fault it in any way, and that lens was just made for this sensor.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the Sony RX1 (or the RX1R variant) and the Leica Vario X cameras. Both have impressed me with the image quality I have seen on the Internet and I haven't managed yet to hold either in my hands. That's partly because it's too dangerous for my bank account. I'm sure that if I held either in my hands I would have to purchase them so I've been keeping away from going anywhere near a camera shop.

One of the reasons I like the Sony RX1 is because it's a full frame camera in a small package and a wonderful fixed 35mm lens mounted on it. Another great feature I like on the RX1 is the possibility to select a 50 and 75mm crop mode, but this is only available in jpg mode, and I'm not the biggest fan of the Sony jpg engine. A reason not to get the RX1 is the extra cost for the EVF and that is another hump to go on top of the camera. I much prefer the internal EVF and the release of the Panasonic GX7 has got me looking in that direction at present. I think Panasonic has got it right with this camera and have listened to the user base to improve their designs. I know the G series has an EVF but those cameras tend to be pretty light, whereas I prefer a certain heft to a camera. I find that it stabilises the system in my hand. The GX7 costs approximately a third of the cost of the Sony and may well be a candidate for future puchases.

I've always wanted to possess a Leica camera but the rangefinders are not for me. I tried out an 8.2 but found that it just doesn't suit my photographic needs. They brought out the X1 and X2 but found those just too expensive for what they offered and passed on them. Now, with the introduction of the Vario I'm again looking into a Leica camera, which offers a 24-70 equivalent fixed zoom and an exteral EVF. I have an Olympus VF2 so that will fit on the Vario cutting the cost of the purchase.

So what's keeping me from purchasing the Leica? Well, firstly the cost again. I keep asking myself if the camera is really worth the €2800 asking price. You must admit, it's a little steep but then again it is a Leica. I think if they're not careful they will price themselves out of the market, especially with the price of their lenses going through the roof. Leicas are still a niche segment and in these economic climates, less and less people can really afford to purchase these luxury items.

Having read through this post again, I think I've already made my decision about these cameras and that is, I'm going to hold off any purchases for the present. Another reason for the decision is the Fujifilm X100S. Just look at the image above, how much better can the Sony or Leica be, especially for my use. Not much wrong with the image quality here, although image quality is not all there is to be considered.

This venue grows it's own vegetables and fruit. They have different sorts of apple trees growing all around the grounds and I took a similar photo of four different apple trees for this collage. Like I sain in one of my previous posts more of this type of image will be posted in the future with the longest side being 1200px long. Please let me know what you think.

Another change to the site has been the ability to post a comment directly underneath the image for the day. I think it's easier than having to go to the comments page for this. I hope some of you will take advantage of it. Some control is necessary I'm afraid, but that's the way it is these days.

I just love these colours again and exposure was perfect for my tastes. What impresses me the most is that the grass has that natural colour which is not to be taken for granted. I have real problems with grass with a couple of systems in this lighting conditions. They come out light green and overexposed, but not here, it's as it was on the day.

The X-E1 did very well here as the whites didn't blow out and the statue is also correctly exposed. Hardly any post processing in this image. It's very sharp as you can see with the background slightly blurred. Taken at 39mm and f3.6. Love the colours too any they are spot on again.

In my last post I said I took images in the same light, however I took this one when shade was prevailing. I'm still impressed with the WB and metering here. This system is not the quickest in the world but I think it's faster than my Nex system (which I vote as the slowest of all the systems I possess). Another quirk of the Nex systems is when it shuts down. It takes a few seconds before the final clunk from the lens is heard, I find it very strange indeed. It seem worse with Sigma lenses I use on it but it also happens with Sonys own lenses. It's just something that happens with the system and I've found that I've grown used to it and tend to ignore it these days.
