Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

When I visited this location I had 3 systems with me; the Sony Nex-7, the Fujifilm X-E1 and the Fujifilm X100S. I wanted to get some test images to see how each system did in the same lighting conditions. I took similar images with all three systems and I'll be posting the results as I get around to processing them. Obviously I couldn't take the same image with the same focal length because they're all different but it does give you an idea of the colour and sharpness of the systems.

This is the last of the Sony images and although I don't really like using the lens, it does produce some nice images and if I need a longer lens on the Nex system then I'll grab this lens for certain.

Next comes the images from the Fuji X-E1 and the 18-55 f2.8-4 kit lens, which is a very decent lens in my opinion.

Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

As you can see the image quality is ok. I can't say it's a lens I like using but I can't tell you why. Some lenses I just love using but others just don't get me excited at all. One of the most frustrating thing about this lens is the hood. It has me swearing every time I try to attach it because it just doesn't seem to fit all that well. Maybe it's just my copy but it really does get my gander up. In short, I hate it.

Once it's on the camera the lens does produce some nice images. All these images I'm posting from this lens were taken at 55mm, no reason for that, it just happened that I selected images that were taken at that focal length.

Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

Sony E 55-210 f4.5-6.3 OSS

I normally use my Sony Nex cameras for my legacy manual focus lenses because of the focus peaking function the cameras provide, which is the best implemented at the time of this post. Just my opinion of course. However Olympus and Panasonic have now introduced focus peaking into their systems and Fuji have upgraded their camera firmware which enables focus peaking. I haven't used the Olympus or Panasonic systems yet but I do have a Fujifilm XE-1 and I can tell you the focus peaking function is not my cup of tea. Only white is available and I find it really difficult to see while trying to manual focus. I wish they would provide more colours which would make it easier to see. White is just too common a colour for this and I tend to use yellow on my Nex systems. It really does stand out especially if I set the value to high.

Sometimes though, I like to use AF with the E system lenses and I tend to use the long end of every zoom I use. The 55-210 f4.5-6.3 was the only one I considered because it's cheap and pretty small. The keep the size of the lens small, they had to make the lens pretty slow. The fastest aperture available if f4.5 which is pretty slow and that's at the wide end. At 210mm you are at f6.3 which means this lens was not designed for low light hand held work. On a tripod you might be fine but I only use this lens when the light is good because most of my photography is done hand held. One thing it's got going for it is OSS which does really help me. I'm not as young as I was and I find these stabalization systems pretty good overall.
