Olympus E-PL1 - Voigtländer 90 f3.5 M Mount

Olympus E-PL1 - Voigtländer 90 f3.5 M Mount

I've been looking for one of these for some time. The ones I found were in excellent condition but the asking price was simply too steep. And then one came up on ebay for a good price and I took the plunge. I've heard good things about it and wanted it for my Nex and Olympus systems. I tend to use the Nex system mostly for manual focus legacy lenses and the Olympus E-PL1 gets used for the same purpose. I find manual focusing with the E-PL1 better than all the remaining Olympus cameras. Don't ask me why, it must be a personal thing. The fact that it has the old 12MP sensor in it doesn't really matter, although when using the new sensors you can tell that the sensor is getting old. The new sensors Olympus are using are so much better.

I've been waiting for a m4/3 camera with focus peaking and all of a sudden Olympus and Panasonic bring them out onto the market. Which one I'll go for is uncertain but I will buy one just for these lenses. If anyone is interested in these manual focus lenses I can highly recomment the Voigtländer lenses (made by Cosina) because they offer a lot and the price is right. Build quality is very high and they really shine on these modern cameras. You can buy some very cheap legacy lenses from all manufacturers (present and past) but I like to know what I'm going to get. I'll spend a little more, but guaranteed the image quality is that much better.

Take a look at the composite above and tell me that you're not impressed by the image quality.

Voigtländer Lenses III

Last one of these for now but I'm planning on posting more composites or collages in the future. This is where you see that I've processed the 50mm image a little warmer than 35mm one. I like both and tend to play around with some of these images until I get a look that I like.

If you would like more of these comparison images, please let me know and I'll do what I can to some more composites up.

Voigtländer Lenses I

Voigtländer Lenses I

Something a little different today. I took a little walk with 2 x Sony Nex-5N bodies, one with the Voigtländer 35 f2.5 Skopar attached and the other mounting the Voigtländer 50 f2.5 Skopar. These lenses are really small and compact and are great on the Nex cameras. I just photographed a few buildings and views from the same standpoint with each camera so that I could campare the images against each other. Both lenses performed very well, but I prefer the images from the 35 f2.5. If you look at the image above (showing my favourite building in Frankfurt), you can see the difference between a 35mm and 50mm lens. Both were set at f5.6, which is just about the optimum aperture for theses lenses on the Nex cameras. I just love the rendition I get from these lenses, and I admit to being a Voigtländer fanboy.

This lens still amazes me. It doesn't matter on which camera I mount it on the images are very good and micro-contrast is also very good. With some of these older lenses the lack of contrast is a real turn-off and you can't really bring that back 100% in post-processing.
I had a chance of comparing this lens against the Leica 75 F/2.5 lens on the Fujifilm X-E1 and you just couldn't tell the difference. The images were identical. Now, if mounted on a Leica body you may notice a difference but since I don't own a Leica (and I don't intend owning one) then the CV 75 f/2.5 will do me fine.
I paid in the region of €350 Euro for the CV lens, the Leica will set you back between €1000 and €1300.
That alone is a great arguement for keeping the CV lens (for me).

This is the Nex-7 with the CV 35 f/1.7 lens mounted. The lens is not very well known and you won't see it coming onto the market very often, but it is one of the best lenses Voigtländer have ever built.
As you can see it fits the Nex-7 very nicely and is not front heavy at all. Stop down a couple of stops and the lens is very sharp with godd micro-contrast. I've used it mostly on the Nex-5N (which still produces amazing files) but I will have to go out with it on the Nex-7 when time permits.

I thought it might be quite useful to some people to see actual lenses mouted on various bodies to see how big or small they are for everyday use. In the image above you can see how small the CV 21 f/4 lens is on the Nex-5N and the Nex-5N can't be clasified as a large camera. If anything, it could be clasified by some people as being too small for use, and I can see their point of view. Since I have small hands it actually feels fine for me, but any smaller and I would have to say no. This is the smallest combination that I will consider. This lens is in the same league as the CV 35 F/2.5 and CV 50 f/2.5 lenses. Really small but delivers very good image quality.

Although I like the above image I think this will be the last image that I will post from this lens. Unless something dramatic happens to change my mind about this lens it will get one more outing in summer in good weather to confirm my suspicions and then it will be sold.
Anybody interested in this lens, just get in touch with me.

Something isn't right with the focusing mechanism with this lens or it doesn't like being paired up to a Nex camera. Although I use the peeking function I get the feeling that the image is misfocused. Not all of the time but in a lot of cases. No I do not have this problem with other lenses so I will dismiss the arguement that it's the photographer that is the problem in this case. I know the DOF is shallow at f3.5 but normally I stop the lens down to f5.6 or f8.
The image above is sharp whree I focused the lens, namely on the moss growing on the branch. I took three images of this just to make sure I got one and two out of three images were not in focus.

OK, I can't fault the lens for a lack of contrast in this image. There wasn't a lot there to start with.
As you can see the weather was pretty cold, colours were muted and dull. Probably the wrong type of weather to go out testing lenses but I have to utilize the time available to me.
