By modern standards, these Voigtlaender lenses can't be classed as expensive especially the Skopars. These can be had for a few hundred $/€ depending on where you live. Presently I own the 35 and 50 f2.5 lenses and both perform well. As I've stated before I don't use either on the A7 / A7r comeras but they fee quite at home on the A7s and perform best on APS-C or M43 sensors.

What attracts me to these lenses? Well it's just their signature and is not restricted to the Skopar series. I like using all of the Voigtlaender lenses and I do own quite a few of them. If you haven't tried one of these lenses before, why not just rent one for a few days if you can, you'll be pleasently surprised I'm sure.

Voigtländer Skopar 35 f2.5

Voigtländer Skopar 35 f2.5

I've bben layed up for awhile now and can't get out to do any photography. I'm sure I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Because I don't get out to do any tests etc I've been trawling through my archive to reprocess images or to try something diferent.

What I decided to do was to make some composites from different lenses that don't come up too often here. This is an experiment and I'm not sure about the image quality in general of these, as they have been re-processed so to speak. I hope to improve on the method by which these have been put together, and I'm looking forward to an increase in image resolution as I get these posted.

There are a number of these composites as I won't be able to get out for another few weeks, but I hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed making them. If you have any requests, or general comments, please add them to the comments section under each image.

There won't be much text within the post itself, unless I have some new information regarding the lens itself or about the system used to take the images. Most of these images where a manual lens has been used were taken on the Sony Nex system (either a 5N or the 7).

As you can see the first composite is from the Voigtländer Skopar 35 f2.5, which is becoming my favourite lens at this focal length.

Sony Alpha A7 - Voigtländer Skopar 35 f2.5

I just love the Voigtländer lenses because to use them is a joy and image quality is very very good. I own a lot of these and I haven't found a lens lacking up to the Heliar 75 f2.5. Above that, in my opinion, the Voigtländer lenses start to deteriorate. I have the 85 f3.5 which I think is the worst Voigtländer lens I have used. I also own the 90 f3.5 which I find difficult to warm up to. maybe I have bad copies of both but I'm now going to test or exchange them for better copies, as I have other better lenses in the focal length range.

But all the others ranging from the 15 f4.5 heliar to the 75 f2.5 heliar, all are great lenses. On some of these lenses, like the 35 f2.5 Skopar and the 40 f1.4 Nokton the construction also includes the thumb lever for focusing. I think this is one reason I don't use these lenses more, I just hate using it. This thumb lever is found on Leica and rangefinder lenses also and I suppose somebody thought it a good idea to incorporate it into the lens design. I personally just can't get used to it and it just gets in my way. Apart from that I just can't fault these lenses, and the solid construction means these lenses will be with me for many many years to come. One final thing I have to mention is the price you pay for these lenses is very reasonable, in my part of the world you can get them for €400-€500. Try and purchase a Leica lens for that price.

Voigtländer Lenses III

Last one of these for now but I'm planning on posting more composites or collages in the future. This is where you see that I've processed the 50mm image a little warmer than 35mm one. I like both and tend to play around with some of these images until I get a look that I like.

If you would like more of these comparison images, please let me know and I'll do what I can to some more composites up.

Voigtländer Lenses I

Something a little different today. I took a little walk with 2 x Sony Nex-5N bodies, one with the Voigtländer 35 f2.5 Skopar attached and the other mounting the Voigtländer 50 f2.5 Skopar. These lenses are really small and compact and are great on the Nex cameras. I just photographed a few buildings and views from the same standpoint with each camera so that I could campare the images against each other. Both lenses performed very well, but I prefer the images from the 35 f2.5. If you look at the image above (showing my favourite building in Frankfurt), you can see the difference between a 35mm and 50mm lens. Both were set at f5.6, which is just about the optimum aperture for theses lenses on the Nex cameras. I just love the rendition I get from these lenses, and I admit to being a Voigtländer fanboy.
