Olympus OM-D

Olympus OM-D

The more I use this camera the more I like it. It sort of creeps up on you. At the beginning I wasn't very impressed with the file quality, until that is, I learned how to process them. It does take a little more time and effort but it is worth it. Especially working with the highlights in LR4.1; highlight recovery is very impressive indeed.

When I go out with my camera on these outings I generally don't go out looking for specific images. On holiday trips it's different. I know where I'm going and I know what I'm looking for. I just walk around and photograph what takes my fancy. Like today's post.

Now this image is very sharp, even at 100% viewing. Again at 150mm. One thing again with the Olympus OM-D, I generally have to dial in negative Exposure Compensation as not to blow out the highlights. This isn't any different from all my other Olympus cameras. With Panasonic however, I have the opposite, I always dial in positive Exposure Compensation otherwise the image will be dark and flat looking.

As you may have noticed I've concentrated on the long end of this lens. I know that images images from the 40 - 100 range of the lens are very good. Just wanted to see the longer end to try and convince others of the sharpness that I get from it. Either I must have a very good copy or other have received a lemon of a lens. Shame really.

Very inquisitive birds as you may already know. This one watched me intently for what must have been 10 minutes. Can't fault the lens again either. Some must be thinking that I applied a lot of sharpening to these image, which is not the case. All I do is a little sharpening to the image after downsizing for the web, which is normal. I have however processed the raw file more aggresively in LR4. The files do require a little more work.

Again taken at 150 and f8. I must admit I almost always set this lens to f8. Seeems to be the best aperture for the lens. These birds are really fun to watch. They're always up to something and this one was in the process of demolishing a piece of wood.
Focused on the eye and as you can see, the eye is sharp.

Olympus OM-D with the mZD 14-150

Olympus OM-D with the mZD 14-150

So, many people are asking what all the fuss is about the new Olympus OM-D. Having used it now on a few outings it does feel like a nice camera. One thing I have particuarly noticed is that post processing workflow has had to change. The files don't seem all that sharp coming out of the camera and some heavier PP is in order. Dynamic range is better than the old models and I was dying to ry out my favourite mZD 14-150 on it. I like this lens on my older Olympus cameras and it's the one lens that always goes with me on vacation (if I'm taking the Olympus cameras that is).
Hre's one taken at 150, where people complain about image quality from this lens. Sorry, I can't really fault it at this focal length, or at any other come to think of it. The next few posts in the coming days are about the images using this combination. Following those I'll post some images from the OMD sporting the Olympus mZD 75-300 lens. I was quite surprised by this lens as it performs much better on the OM-D than on the older models.

SFXII

SFXII

This is the converted image. I think it turned out quite well. There is no beating this piece of software from Nik. Lots of possibilities to tweak the image to just how you want it to look. I must see what I can get out of this in Lightroom 4.1 which has improved immensely since the update.
Hope you like this.

Olympus 45 f1.8 on the E-PL1

The last image from this mini series for now. I thought this image would be great for a B&W conversion using my favourite software for this, namely SFXII. Still the best. I thought I would post the colour image here first before I post the conversion, which will be tomorrow.

I'll have to remember to stop down a little with this lens but then I'd have to increase the ISO. I'm not terribly impressed with the high ISO performance of the E-PL1 but a bit of noise reduction might do the trick. I'll have to test it next time. It really doesn't make a difference if I use the E-PL1 or the E-P3. It's just that focusing on the latter is a lot better.
