Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

This lens delivers excellent resolution and very good micro contrast. The lens reminds me of the Leica look which I totally love, but I'm not a real fan of rangefinder cameras. I don't like the price either which is a deciding factor in why I haven't got one. I am not prepared to pay €8000 for a camera body, Leica or not. And then come the lenses which aren't cheap either. I think I'll just stick to these cheap cameras and lenses and enjoy them.

Very smart decision IMHO. The real artists don't care about expensive tools as long as they can realise their visions. Good luck!

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

All the images made with this combination were converted with Nik SFX II. They just had to be converted because they all fit the location. An old monastery where I visited with a few cameras and lenses. In all I made three rounds of the buildings, each time with a different camera system. It took me all afternoon to do this but it was well worth it. It's amazing how you always find something new each time you go around a location. What I also like to do is go around in the other direction after the first round is completed. Things just jump out that craves to be photographed.

The Voigtländer 21 f4 was picked up on ebay for a very good price and it fits licely on the Sony Nex-5N. This camera is truely a great photographic machine. The more I use it the more I prefer it to the Nex-7. I posted a few days ago that I've got a love - hate relationship going on with that camera. I now use my manual lenses on the Nex-5N only and have relegated the Nex-7 to the native E mount lenses. Not that there's a lot of choice there but a couple of lenses will do me as I tend to use that camera in good light conditions only.

Olympus E-M5 - Olympus mZD 12 f2

Olympus E-M5 - Olympus mZD 12 f2

This is one of the rooms which has been renovated and is being used for small recitals and such events. Note the ISO here was at 640 due to the low light levels.

This is the last image from this series for the present, I hope you've had a feel for what the 12 f2 lens can achieve. For those sitting on the fence about this camera; just get off it and buy one. It really is an amazing machine.

One last word here which is slightly OT, I've tended to use OM-D and E-M5 interchangebly here since the camera came out but now that has to change. With the introduction of the E-M1 I'm going to have to be careful about naming conventions from now on because OM-D is the camera series and the E-Mx will be the camera designation.

I must say that E-M1 and 12-40 f2.8 lens looks so enticing, doesn't it? What's actually drawing it to me is the peeking function it offers, but then again the new Panasonic GX7 has it too which can be purched for under a €1000. The E-M1 plus 12-40 f2.8 will set one back €2300 here in Europe at present. This is going to be a difficult one. Depending on which one I choose, it will definately be my last camera for some time to come. I've been waiting for the m4/3 system to have this feature for my manual lenses and it's here...at last.

Most of these images were taken at f2 due to the low light levels and the camera was set to auto-ISO. There's a lot of DOF in the images at this aperture due to the smaller sensor. The Nikon V1 system is better at this because of the even smaller sensor but noise is better controlled on the m4/3 system. Just as you would expect.

This is a pretty clean image for ISO800 which really is as high as I like to go. It doesn't mean that I don't go higher, it's just I like to keep my ISO as low as possible and I'm not a high ISO shooter anyway. This is still a drawback and weakness of the m4/3 system which applies to Panasonic as well. The smaller sensor is of course at fault here because there is no substitution for a large sensor. They will always be the better choice for high ISO work (at present).

I've only got two words for these images: simply stunning (and I don't mean that the image composition is stunning, just the image quality).

The texture of the walls here is simply amazing. Probably you can't see it at this size but it really is true to life. The lighting, the detail, texture and everything about the image is really how it looked. I'm blown away by the quality and rendition I'm getting out of this camera.

A lot of detail here but what is also remarkable is that the highlights haven't blown out and the blacks aren't blocked. I love the way the shadows fall, just the way I like my images to look.

Olympus E-M5 - Olympus mZD 12 f2

When I went to Kloster Eberbach to do some testing of the Nikon V1 and the 1 Nikkor 6.7-13 f3.5-5.6 lens, I also took the E-M5 along with the mZD 12 f2 lens. What a beautiful lens, very sharp and quick to focus. The next few images are from that lens and I'm not going to include a lot of text with the images. I think the images says it all. I can't find anything to fault with this lens being a 24mm in classic 35mm terms, it really is wide enough for me for normal shooting. Anything wider and it seems my brain just switches off. Probably a 28mm would also do in a pinch but I must say the quality of the lens in combination with the E-M5 is very very good.
