The Best of the Legacy 28mm Lenses

The Best of the Legacy 28mm Lenses

A last image from the 28mm lenses. I've included a Nikon image here to compare it to the Olympus OM 28 f2.8. This image isn't actually all that bad (one of the few). You can see that the Nikon meters slightly darker on the Nex cameras. It's equal to the Olympus here, so if you do manage to get a good copy, it'll be a keeper.

The bottom two, again from the Sigma and Vivitar lenses are comparable. I really can't tell the difference between them so it doesn't matter which lens you select here so it's just on ergonomics. If you enjoy using one lens over the other, just go for it.

Now, why aren't the Sigma and Vivitar lenses from the same manufacturer? If you look carefully at the above image, you'll see that the Sigma seem a little wider than the Vivitar. You can see the cobblestones in the Sigma image where they're nowhere in sight in the Vivitar image. I must stress here that I was standing in the exact same position when taking both images. Also there's a little bit more to be seen on both left and right side of the image from the Sigma lens.

The Best of the Legacy 28mm Lenses

The Best of the Legacy 28mm Lenses

I thought I would post a compilation of 4 images showing the results from 4 different lenses. I've left the Nikon 28 f2.8 out because of the poor performance of the lens. I'll repeat here that the poor performance was due to a bad copy of this lens, and if you should purchase a good copy the performance should be up there with the best. My 50, 100 and 135 E Series Nikon lenses perform very well indeed on the Nex and m4/3 cameras.

Opening the image to full size it's easily visible that the Pentax Takumar (top right) has the best rendition and sharpness of all the lenses. The colour is also better to my eye but this is easily corrected in post.

The Olympus OM 28 f2.8 came in second (top left). These 2 images were taken just seconds apart.

The bottom 2 images taken with the Sigma and Vivitar lenses were taken several days later so the lighting is a little different. Both don't come close to the Takumar. They do however, look so similar that I would have said the lens is from the same manufacturer, but I don't believe this to be the case. Why? I'll post the reason tomorrow.

Panasonic GF1 - Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens

Panasonic GF1 - Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 Kit Lens

I find it really hard to sell my equipment, as a matter of fact I don't (apart from what I consider really bad). I haven't bought all that much equipment that I consider really bad, I always attempt to work within the boundaries of what a certain lens or camera can do. If need be (and quite often it is so) I change my post processing workflow to suite the equipment. I think most people do this as equipment characteristics differ.
One afternoon I decided to get the old Panasonic GF1 out of the drawer and stick my favourtite kit lens on it; the Panasonic 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. I still consider this the best kit lens ever made (although the Fujinon X 18-55 F2.8-4 lens is also a very good lens). One attraction of the m4/3 system is that the lenses are interchangeable with all the cameras made by Olympus and Panasonic. That, to me, is a great plus.
Right now I'm really struggling to get the correct colour from the newer Panasonic bodies but not with the Olympus cameras and since Panasonic has some good lenses lacking in the Olympus corner I just mount those on the Olympus bodies. I think the only Panasonic body I has really great colour from is the DMC-L1 which I still have and use with the PL 4/3 14-150 lens. A really remarkable combination. However at only 7.5MP it's not really competing with the newer models for resolution. Having said that I've printed out images at 80 x 60 cms and they look great.

Fujifilm X-E1 and the XF 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 Kit Lens

The last conversion you are going to have to look at. I hope these images have shown at least some people just what this system is capable of, and I hope it has been of some interest to the rest.
Again very detailed and what I like about this image is the overcast sky. I couldn't tel the difference when I was taking this but in the conversion you can see the different cloud strength by the different tones. All this done without the banding problem I was experiencing with the old 12 megapixel m4/3rd sensor. The OM-D is much better in this respect, but then again, they used a different manufacturer this time around. A very good decision if you ask me.

There won't be a conversion for this image, I just thought I'd slip it in because I like it. These buildings are in the west harbour area of Frankfurt, Germany.

And the next one. I find that the Frankfurt skyline offers me everything I need to test cameras and lenses. Notice how sharp these image are, and it has nothing to do with a lot of sharpening. These images are very sharp coming out of the camera.

This a different format to the previous image with a slightly different angle of view.
I don't like flat monochrome images, hence the reason for the high contrast in these images. They are more pleasing to my eye.
