Voigtländer 21 f4 M-Mount

Voigtländer 21 f4 M-Mount

Another winner by Voigtländer. I really am impressed by the quality of these lenses, now built by Cosina. You know you have a quality product when handling these lenses. They should last you a lifetime if you take care of them. All metal and quite heavy compared to other lenses you can purchase today, it really is fun photographing with these gems. I now have quite a few Voigtländer lenses and I haven't been disappointed by any of them so far. Of course, don't use these on the Nex-7, you're just making more work for yourselves due to the purple edges you get from that sensor. If you shoot in B&W then you won't have that problem but I prefer to shoot colour and convert in PP.

P.S. The vignetting you see does not come from the lens on the Nex-5N, I did that in PP.

The last from the series for now. This lens screams to be used as a landscape lens. It is excellent and for the price I paid everyone should have one. Really good for architectural shots too but for some it might not be wide enough. I think I'm going to try this lens on a m4/3 camera, should be fun since I prefer the 4:3 ratio and I can set the cameras for the 1:1 format which is my prefered format. I think that is a real pain with the Nex series of cameras, that surely must be rectifiable with a firmware update.
Come on Sony, just get it fixed.

If you could see this image at full size, you would be amazed at the detail in the walls and you have sharpness throughout the image, from near to far. Just set the lens to f8 and the focusing to just shy of 2 meters and the DOF is enormous. No need to change anything except Exposure Compensation. Truely a point and shoot with this focal length. The same applies to my Voigtländer 15 f4.5 except the DOF with that lens is even greater, if that is possible.

This lens delivers excellent resolution and very good micro contrast. The lens reminds me of the Leica look which I totally love, but I'm not a real fan of rangefinder cameras. I don't like the price either which is a deciding factor in why I haven't got one. I am not prepared to pay €8000 for a camera body, Leica or not. And then come the lenses which aren't cheap either. I think I'll just stick to these cheap cameras and lenses and enjoy them.

Very smart decision IMHO. The real artists don't care about expensive tools as long as they can realise their visions. Good luck!

Sony Nex-5N - Voigtländer 21 f4

All the images made with this combination were converted with Nik SFX II. They just had to be converted because they all fit the location. An old monastery where I visited with a few cameras and lenses. In all I made three rounds of the buildings, each time with a different camera system. It took me all afternoon to do this but it was well worth it. It's amazing how you always find something new each time you go around a location. What I also like to do is go around in the other direction after the first round is completed. Things just jump out that craves to be photographed.

The Voigtländer 21 f4 was picked up on ebay for a very good price and it fits licely on the Sony Nex-5N. This camera is truely a great photographic machine. The more I use it the more I prefer it to the Nex-7. I posted a few days ago that I've got a love - hate relationship going on with that camera. I now use my manual lenses on the Nex-5N only and have relegated the Nex-7 to the native E mount lenses. Not that there's a lot of choice there but a couple of lenses will do me as I tend to use that camera in good light conditions only.

Anoter one that shows the colour shift. One thing it does do however, and I find it kind of cool, is that it draws the viewer to the center of the image. It acts like a vignette. Nice rendition again. I wish they could fix this in firmware though, but I'm not holding my breath.
Last image from the Voigtländer 21mm f/4 lens for now.

This image definately shows the colour shift problem. Don't forget it happens with rangefinder lenses only. Any other manual focus lens you use on the Nex cameras do not show this problem.

This is a new lens to enter the fold. I was actually looking at the 25 f4 but I got such a good deal on this one I couldn't say no. One thing really does bother me when using these rangefinder lenses on the Nex system is the colour shift at the edges of the images. This is not only restricted to the Nex-7 as you will see in the following images. I used this lens on the Nex-5N and it is still visible.
